Sporadic Shooting and Abuse of Fire Arms by Security Agencies: Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha Fore Warned Nigeria

By: Andy Maduako

It was Albert Einstein that said that, we cannot keep doing the same thing always, while expecting a different result. It is also an absolute truism that, to be forewarned is to be fore armed. So,the consequence of contemning any warning or advise, remains known – disastrous.

Presently,Nigeria is no doubt, reaping the bitter consequences of treating the call for the reform of the Nigerian armed forces and teming their sporadic shootings by Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha with contempt.

The Nigerian military murdered sleep last week,by shooting at peaceful protesters who were at the Lekki toll gate, Lagos. Therein, scores were severely injured and others lost their lives. That not being enough, other youths who took to the streets in other parts of the country to protest the Lekki incident were shot dead by security agencies. And some by stray bullets.

But this sad occurrence which almost brought the country to her knees, dented her image before the international community and had the millions of already nerve-frayed Nigerian youths exploding the keg of the gun powder which Nigeria had always been said to be sitting on,would not have been experienced. If only the motion sponsored by Hon. Princess Miriam Onuoha, from IMO state early this year was not just headed to, but also implemented.

It has been a moment of ache and pain to the average Nigerian youth, therefore needless sounding fawning to any Politician. But allort me the privilege to say here that,Hon. Princess Miriam’s motion, sponsored on her first day in office; 30th January 2020,if implemented, would have gone a long way in averting the mess Nigeria found herself. The outspoken female lawmaker bluntly called for the reform of the armed forces, as regards their usage of fire arms. According to her, Nigerians cannot keep losing lives at the hands of trigger happy security agencies who ought to be protecting our lives and prosperities as underscored in the country’s sacred constitution.
But sadly, such weighty and all important motion which got the votes of the entire legislative house and the approval of the speaker, was not matched with actions by the executive.

What would it have caused the Nigerian government to take heed immediately by supplying the security agencies with rubber bullets to combat civil cases, such as dispersing of crowd?
The Nigerian government must find a way to prove that, our lawmakers are not figure heads who make several inputs without such being implemented by the executive. And the time is now.

Now that lives have been lost, inestimable properties destroyed nationwide and the stigma of that gory incident still living with us, it is advisable that henceforth, the “warnings” , legislative inputs, and sound contributions of the likes of Hon.Princess Miriam Onuoha and other legislators, who have proven to understand what the Nigerian people really need and the panacea to such feat, should not be taken with a pinch of salt again.

May Nigeria prevail.
