On Senator Araraume’s Appointment.
Prior to president Buhari’s visit to Imo State, I wrote a piece entitled: “Buhari’s Visit: Protecting the Igbo Interest,” wherein I urged Ndigbo to keep aside whatever misgivings we might have about the presidency, embrace his visit and explore to its fullness the enormous benefits that associate such august visit.
I hammered that the town hall meeting between President Buhari and Igbo leaders presented a golden opportunity for ndigbo to make demands from Mr President, ranging from appointment of our sons and daughters into key positions in the Federal Government to solving the issue of insecurity in the South East to demanding for the unconditional release of Igbo youths illegally detained in police cells. These thoughts of mine were also captured in the address presented by the apex Igbo group in Nigeria, Ọhaneze Ndigbo.
Expectedly, those who felt it was a crime for me to hold a different albeit sensible view on Mr president’s visit besieged my post and wanted to bully me to silence but I knew that sooner than later they would realise how emotional they were. I was convinced that Mr president’s visit to Imo would yield good news for the state and the entire South East. One of the gifts that comes with writing is prophesy – the ability to correctly predict the outcome of tomorrow from the events of today.
Fast forward to yesterday when one of president Buhari’ spokesman, Femi Adesina, had announced Senator Araraume’s appointment as the chairman of the Board of NNPC, those who had called me names for my stance on Buhari’s visit were the first to congratulate the isiebu born chief and tagged it a win for Imo State and the South East. Their excitements were so much so that they ensured that it was the trending issue on the blogosphere last night.
However, conspiracy theorists, spin doctors and propagandists in the state who would rather miss their meal tickets than to see Gov Uzodinma given accolade for his smartness and political courage to convince the president on the need to visit the state and ensure that the South East is captured prominently in the scheme of things in Aso Rock, started insinuating that Araraume’s appointment indicated that the Presidency has decided to align with Okorocha-Ararume camp.
The antecedents of these spin doctors against Gov Uzodimma are well documented. First they told us that a Review at the Supreme Court would cut short the stay of Gov Uzodimma at Douglas House. It didn’t happen. The conjured another conspiracy theory that the death of Abba Kyari had closed the doors of the presidency against Gov Uzodimma, but it turned out that Gov Uzodimma even gained more access to Mr president afterwards. The latest was their claim that President Buhari would delegate Vice president Yemi Osinbanjo to Imo State but not only did the president appeared himself, he took part in a town hall meeting. They have lost the credibility to sell a narrative to Imolites but they are commissioned to do and they won’t stop. However the good felling is in the knowledge that Imolites are not weary of their lies.
Araraume’s appointment is one of gains of Buhari visit to Imo which was facilitated by Gov Hope Uzodinma. President Buhari owed it to Ndigbo to act on their demands and Senator Araraume’s appointment is in line with the demands with Ọhaneze Ndigbo. That this appointment was announced few days after president Buhari’s visit to Imo State makes nonsense the position of mischief makers.
Congratulations, Chief Araraume, Isiala Mbano, Imo State and the South East.
