The recently announced plans by the Federal Medical Centre FMC Owerri, to bury abandoned corpses in a mass grave, may have been put on hold, following the misconception of the public about the exercise.
The Federal facility had recently announced plans to decongest it’s morgue, by burying corpses that have stayed very long in their possession, without being claimed by their relatives.
There had been reaction from numerous quarters, including the IPOB, who in a statement by the group’s Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful, warned against the burial of the corpses, alleging that they were of dead IPOB members, killed by security operatives in the state.
MaaziTV correspondent Mercy Anaele, who visited the Federal Medical Centre, confirmed from sources who declined to be mentioned, that the hospital authorities have suspended the exercise, following public outcry and threats from several quarters, against staff members of the facility.
MaaziTV further revealed that the exercise was totally misunderstood by the public, which was the reason for the resistance from members of the public.
According to several sources at the hospital interviewed by our correspondent, FMC was not planning to bury victims of the recent Insecurity that gripped the state, neither were they burying members of IPOB, killed by security operatives.
Our correspondent revealed that those that were planned for the mass burial, were abandoned corpses of lunatics, people who were found dead on the streets, as well as accident victims with nobody coming forward to claim them.
The staff of the hospital interviewed by our correspondent, further revealed that the facility had severally called on the public to come and check for their loved ones at the facility.
“This is not the first time we do this,” a source at FMC stated. “I wonder why this one will be different. When a corpse stays for more than two years, it is basic practice everywhere to bury them, if nobody comes to claim them.”
MaaziTV revealed that abandoned corpses are buried 3-4 years after and run in that chronological order.
MaaziTV revealed, that there was no way a recent corpse would be buried in the planed mass burial.
“The corpses in question are of people who died on the streets or accident victims who aren’t claimed,” another source at FMC told our correspondent. “The PRO Mrs. Jacinata Achonu was simply doing her job as instructed, and all this negative reaction is uncalled for. As I am speaking to you now, the management of the hospital have shelved plans of burying any corpses to douse the tension already generated, while the public is properly informed of what the hospital is doing.”
“No victim of the recent insecurity in the state, whose corpse is at the FMC morgue was slated for mass burial. This whole thing is one big misunderstanding.”
As it is now, all burials of unidentified corpses at the Federal facility, no matter how long they have stayed has been put on indefinite suspension by the hospital management.
